WHMIS - Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System

Canadian law requires that any person exposed to hazardous materials in the workplace must be trained in the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).

In 2015 the Canadian WHMIS system was aligned with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) to adopt a standardized set of rules for classifying hazardous products, a set of common rules for labels, and a standard format for safety data sheets (SDSs). This course familiarizes you with the WHMIS 2015 system and how it is used in workplaces.

It is an employee’s responsibility to participate in WHMIS safety training, to take necessary measures to protect themselves and co-workers, and to properly identify and control hazardous materials. The onus is on the employer to ensure that hazardous materials are properly labelled, to have SDSs available, and to offer education and training about the products in the workplace.
